Morality Essay for Little Women (help STAT)

Postby Camellia » Thu Nov 05, 2009 5:28 pm

What are good virtures and vices for Jo March?

I have that she is selfless.

Also, I know she is short-tempered. But I know she tried to change. I am not sure how to go about saying how/ if she changed.

Then I was thinking that she was proud/ prideful and then was humbled, but I am not seeing enough examples to support that. . .or anything huge that motivated a permanent change.

Can anyone please offer some advice STAT! Please and thank you!!

Well, her short-temper is a very prominent failing of hers. The book does show her struggle to overcome her temper as she grows in maturity. She is helped by her mother, by the meek example of Beth, and the teaching of Mr. Bear. I would say the point that you can really see her controling her temper is when Amy get's so sick from falling through the ice. She determines then and there to conquer it. So, you could start with examples of her short-temper (the book is peppered with examples) and then go on to prove how she changed, for instance how she handles Laurie when he proposes. She acts very maturely instead of just yelling at him like she probably would have before. I've gotta go but I'll write more later. Good luck Cam!

Thank you Varda! Also, what would the opposite virture to quick tmepered be? Did Jo really every truly get over that? Or did she just learn to control it better?? :?

I absolutely Loved the book. . .it is just the analyzing it!

Well, her temper stems from a lack of patience and self-control. So, the virtue which she aquires that helps her to govern her temper is patience. As to your question, people with quick tempers don't exactly "get over it." Mostly the people who do are saints. But, the virtue is in learning to control their tempers and not let themselves be goaded by others. Are you doing morality or Character Sketch? If you are doing Character sketch you should probably add in something about ambition. Actually, you might even use that in morality to. Her ambition to become famous is a driving force of her character. But, it does change doesn't it?

How are you doing on the theme?

ok, so would I say that she was short-tempered, but became more patient. (And just give examples) And also her selflessness.

It is the Morality essay. :)

And I am thinking the theme miight be along the lines of: Sometimes women have a hard time finding a balance between being a lady and trying to fit into the world full of gender discrimination (other word??), the need to work, and staying genuine to herself. I am not even sure if I am going to try to go along those lines though. Any thoughts??

Yep, that sounds good!

DUH. I'm such an idiot. Well, you alsocould use selflessness as an opposite for her ambition. She was all ambitious to become a writer just to become famous. But, later she wrote for the sake of her family. Also, as you are using the quick temper example you could say how she was striving to perfect her character, and that she succeeded in learning to control her temper. (even though she didn't become a goody-goody)

That sounds like a great idea for the theme! However, remember that it has to apply to more than one character. You could think about what the girls all thought would make them happy (see the scene when they are making their dream mansions with Laurie after Camp Lawrence) and how they ended up. What really matters in life and what is the happiness that Marmee speaks about when she says "I could wish for no greater happiness for you" in the end during the orchard scene.
