Seton’s Religion Program
Religion is the most important subject in Seton’s curriculum, and unlike many other religious education programs and schools, Seton assigns Religion on a daily basis rather than a weekly basis. Students learn about the love of God especially as expressed in salvation history and the sacraments. The Baltimore Catechism series is used as a basis for the content, with Seton’s Religion for Young Catholics Series providing a fuller and age-appropriate explanation of Church teaching. Memorization of key catechism questions is encouraged, but most assessments are focused on comprehension. There is a heavy emphasis on Sacred Scripture and Bible History. Seton strives to provide the most robust and orthodox Catholic education possible.
Religion Pre-K
There are several books that comprise the Religion course for Pre-K. Beautifully illustrated and presented within the context of a loving Catholic family, Religion for Young Catholics—Pre-Kindergarten provides the tools needed to teach your child about the love our Savior Jesus Christ has for each one of us. The New Catholic Picture Bible fosters a love of Scripture right from the beginning of your child’s education. These simply written Bible stories will delight children time after time.
In God’s Rules for Me, children learn that rules are made to keep us safe, and that the most important rules are God’s rules, the Ten Commandments. Children learn that, like the rules in the games we play, God’s rules teach us to live happily and that the great reward for keeping God’s rules is life in Heaven with Our Lord!
In the Pre-Kindergarten Coloring Book Set, children learn their Faith with large, easy to color pictures. Animals of the Bible contains animals named in the Holy Bible. Christmas Coloring Book is in pictures and rhyme as is the Coloring Book about Saints, which features stories of the lives of saints.
In Miracles of Jesus children read and color familiar Bible stories, and children have lessons to color in the life of Christ, in the Coloring Book about Jesus.
Religion K
Students begin their study of who God is, God’s love for us, God’s creation, sin, Jesus as Savior, the Holy Spirit, grace, the Church, the moral life, Mary, angels, saints, Heaven, and Hell. In addition, students become familiar with the parts of the Mass, the decades of the Rosary, and the Stations of the Cross. Children also learn basic prayers and exhibit fundamental practices of the Catholic Faith, especially the Sign of the Cross, morning and evening prayers, and reverent posture and behavior at Mass.
Religion K has 9 books in all. Throughout, students develop the beginnings of an interior life of faith and prayer. In addition to our book Kindergarten Catechism for Young Catholics, the curriculum includes three coloring books on the Holy Bible, the Rosary, and Mary; three Fr. Lovasik books covering the Seven Sacraments, the Angels, and the Ten Commandments; and the well-loved book, My Jesus and I.
Using Religion 1 for Young Catholics, first graders attain a beginning understanding of the fundamentals of the Catholic Faith: the Creed, the Commandments, the Sacraments, and Prayer. Children also learn major events, people, and teachings in the life of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
Students also work with four picture books: Jesus and I, Miracles of Jesus, The Holy Spirit, and Mary My Mother. The Coloring Book About Angels introduces children to the role of angels in the Bible and guardian angels in our own lives.
Religion 2
The focus for this year in Religion is preparation for Penance and First Communion. Second graders study the St. Joseph First Communion Catechism, which uses a question-and-answer format to teach them about the Creed, the Commandments, the Sacraments, and Prayer.
Religion 2 for Young Catholics and Fr. Lovasik's The Holy Rosary round out the course.
Religion 3
Students continue to study the fundamentals of the Catholic Faith in the questions and answers of the St. Joseph First Communion Catechism and in Religion 3 for Young Catholics.
Third graders focus on the Ten Commandments and the Mysteries of the Rosary. Students will also read and study Fr. Lovasik’s Our Lady of Fatima.
Religion 4
This year, students begin The St. Joseph Baltimore Catechism No. 1. As in other books in this series, drawings aid students in understanding the truths of the Faith and the laws of the Church.
In Religion 4 for Young Catholics, students focus on the Apostles’ Creed, the Ten Commandments and the Seven Sacraments. In Bible History 4 for Young Catholics, students learn about the life of Christ in the New Testament.
Religion 5
Religion 5 for Young Catholics increases the student’s understanding of the fundamentals of the Faith, especially Prayer, Sacraments, and the Commandments.
Bible History 5 for Young Catholics provides a study of the Acts of the Apostles and the Early Church. Students once again study the St. Joseph Baltimore Catechism #1 to strengthen understanding of the teachings of the Church.
Religion 6
The New St. Joseph Baltimore Catechism No. 2 and Religion 6 for Young Catholics expand the student’s understanding of the truths of the Faith with a focus on the Creed, the Commandments, the Sacraments, Prayer, and the Mass.
In Bible History for Young Catholics: The Old Testament, the student learns about major events, people, and teachings in the Old Testament from the time of the Judges to the Roman conquest of Palestine.
Religion 7
As they continue to work through The St. Joseph Baltimore Catechism No. 2 as well as Religion 7 for Young Catholic, students build their understanding of the Creed, the Commandments, the Sacraments, the creation of the angels and of man, grace, and the Holy Spirit. Special emphasis is placed on the study of the Sacrament of Confirmation with the book Confirmation Preparation for Young Catholics.
In Bible History: The New Testament, students grow in their knowledge of major events, people, and teachings in the life of Jesus Christ from the Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles.
Religion 8
In their final year of working with The St. Joseph Baltimore Catechism No. 2, eighth graders increase their understanding of the fundamentals of the Catholic Faith: the Creed, the Commandments, the Sacraments, and Prayer.
Special emphasis is placed on the study of Church history using Witness to the Faith: Church History for Young Catholics. The Church’s progress through history is surveyed, beginning with the founding of the Church and continuing through the twentieth century.
